Choosing your Cigar Online

When selecting cigars to buy online, there are a number of considerations to make, depending on your personal preference for strength and flavour.
Wrappers determine the flavour of cigars by up to 60-90%. The wrappers are made from large dried tobacco leaves found near the bottom of the plant, and the colour of the wrapper can help you to determine what the aroma will be like once the cigar is lit.
There are numerous types of wrappers, but the most common varieties are Connecticut, Corojo, Habano, and Maduro.
Connecticut wrappers are mainly of American export, but can also be grown in Ecuador. These wrappers tend to give the cigar a mild aroma and low nicotine content. A spicy or woody taste is typically associated with cigars in Connecticut wrappers. This particular wrapper can be identified by its light colour.
The Corojo wrapper has a slightly darker tone than the Connecticut. Corojo wrappers are typically grown in Honduras, Central America. This type of wrapper tends to give the cigar a spicy and peppery taste.
Habano cigars are typically grown in Nicaragua. Cigars with Habano wrappers have a particularly spicy and bold flavour. These cigars also contain a high level of nicotine, and are often not recommended for cigar beginners, as the bold flavour can be overwhelming and potentially off-putting.
Maduro wrappers can be identified by their dark brown shade, as these wrappers go through a long drying and fermenting process. These wrappers are a popular choice due to them often possessing a slightly sweet flavour; Maduro wrappers have been dubbed the ‘dessert smoke’ for this reason. Some variations of Maduro wrappers can be quite bold in flavour.
A Drink to Accompany Your Cigar?
Many drinks are said to complement the aromas of a cigar. Selecting an appropriate drink which compliments your cigar will bring out the flavours in both. Try traditional complementary pairings, such as cognac, port, whisky or bourbon. Drinks such as wine or gin can be overpowered by the aromas of a cigar.
